ThinkFirst Navajo VIP speakers, Doris Dennison (R) and Cecelia Fred (R)
Eve’s Fund will use the grant to expand its ThinkFirst Navajo Injury Prevention Program, which reduces brain and spinal cord injuries and fatalities among Navajo youth and teens by providing culturally sensitive, free education to schools on the Navajo Nation.
“We are honored to receive our second Quality of Life grant from the Reeve Foundation,” said Barbara Crowell Roy, secretary of Eve’s Fund. “The grant allows us to expand our education efforts in hopes of dramatically lowering the high rate of injuries and deaths among Native youth. The ThinkFirst Navajo program also empowers adult Navajos with paraplegia and provides them with an outlet for public service.”
In 2012, ThinkFirst Navajo will teach 2,000-2,400 students in grades K-12 about serious injuries related to vehicle crashes, sports injuries, alcohol, violence and other factors. Navajo speakers with paraplegia will make the presentations at 20-25 schools across the Navajo Nation.
“The Quality of Life Grants Program allows us to connect with other nonprofit organizations to enable individuals living with paralysis and their families to enhance their daily livelihood,” said Peter T. Wilderotter, president and CEO of the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation. “Promoting as much freedom and independence as possible for individuals living with paralysis is a tenet of our mission. The Quality of Life Grants do just that.”
