Boy Scout Troop 928

Eve’s Fund’s Boy Scout Troop 928: Overcoming fears, learning teamwork and determination

In 2010, Eve’s Fund and Scoutmaster Echohawk Lefthand started  Boy Scout Troop 928 in the area of  Red Mesa Arizona. The troop is a a member of  the Mesa Verde District of the Great Southwest Council. Five boys attended the first meeting  and since then, the troop has grown to ten members. It is one of the few Navajo troops in the Boy Scouts of America.

The troop’s first activity was to visit a ropes course, where they received instruction from Orlando Pioche, Director of Red Eagle Challenge. Through the ropes course, the boys learned the importance of teamwork, determination and overcoming their fears.

During a weekend camping trip to Canyonlands National Park near Moab, Utah, the troop completed an 11-mile hike to the overlook where the Colorado River and Green River merge. The beginning of the hike was very grueling and the boys questioned whether they could make it the whole way. After a few miles, however, everyone was determined to complete the hike. Once they did, the boys were bursting with a sense of confidence and looking forward to the next group challenge.

In late April, the boys attended a camporee in the La Plata mountains along with many other troops from the Mesa Verde District. After a weekend spent learning new camping techniques and competing in various wilderness activities, Troop 928 won second place overall.
