Eve’s Fund and Scoutmaster Echohawk Lefthand have founded Boy Scout Troop 928 in the Mesa Verde District of the Great Southwest Council. The first meeting was held in early February, 2010 with five boys in attendance. Since then, the troop has grown to ten members. It is one of the very few Navajo troops in the Boy Scouts of America.
The first activity was a ropes course, with instruction provided by Orlando Pioche, Director of Red Eagle Challenge. Through the ropes course, troop members learned the importance of teamwork, determination and overcoming fears. Some of their favorite elements were the Mohawk-Walk and the Cat-Walk.
Another major event was a weekend camping trip to the Canyonlands National Park near Moab Utah. The main activity was an 11 mile hike to the overlook where the Colorado and the Green Rivers merge. The beginning of the hike was very grueling and the youngsters questioned whether they could complete the hike. After a few miles, everyone was determined to make it the whole way. At the end of the day, the troop was bursting with a sense of confidence and looking forward to the next group challenge.
Scoutmaster Echohawk Lefthand leads the troop with the assistance of Art Jimm, Ksenija Topic and Raymond Peterson.
