Navajo Preparatory School gave Eve’s Fund an Award of Appreciation at its 2019 annual awards banquet held in May. School trustee, Charley Long, Sr, and Shawna Becenti, Head of School thanked Eve’s Fund founders, Barbara Crowell Roy, who was present at the event, as well as Dr. Robert M. Crowell for their dedication, passion, and commitment to promoting academic excellence, leadership and community involvement of Navajo high school students.
Awards were given to the students and faculty for scholarship, leadership, and citizenship. This year’s Eve’s Fund scholarship recipients, many parents, family members and other community leaders attended the banquet.
Dean of Instruction and Master of Ceremonies, Keith Neil, had all presenters and instructors introduce themselves in Navajo. As is the custom in a traditional Navajo introduction, a person’s clan or heritage is explained. The activity expressed the School’s mission to “promote a strong foundation of Navajo Philosophy” and cultural context to the event.
Trustee Charley Long, Sr. speaks to the audience
Mr. Long, of the Thoreau community, addressed the crowd in Navajo. He spoke of the challenges of getting a good education today. Long encouraged the students to stay on a good path and to avoid drugs and alcohol. In addition, he reminded the students of the school’s motto: “Yideeskaago Naat’aanii-Leaders Now and Into the Future”. Long said he had high hopes that many students would become leaders on the Navajo Nation and elsewhere after completing their college degrees. Finally, he presented Ms. Roy with a large handmade etched Navajo pottery as a token of appreciation from the school’s Board of Trustees.
Barbara Crowell Roy’s Remarks
Eve’s Fund co-founder and president, Barbara Crowell Roy spoke about the origins of Eve’s Fund and its initiatives started in 2005, to honor the memory of her daughter, Eve Erin Crowell. “Eve valued learning and believed in the importance of equitable education for everyone on the planet. She would be proud to know that the financial support Eve’s Fund is providing is helping Navajo Preparatory students achieve their academic goals and plan for a brighter future,” said Roy. She also thanked the generous Eve’s Fund donors for their support of this educational program.
Roy ended her remarks with words from a famous Navajo leader: “Chief Manuelito believed that ‘education has the power to transform and lift up the Navajo people.’ It is our honor to be part of helping these wonderful students believe in themselves and accomplish their dreams.”
