In memory of Eve Erin Crowell
November 4, 1974-February 24, 2005
How is it possible that our beloved daughter, sister, niece, cousin, friend and colleague, Eve Erin Crowell, has been gone for 15 years? It seems like yesterday when we received the devastating news that Eve was dead. She had just turned 30.
On that horrible day, everything changed and nothing will ever be the same again. As Eve’s parents, we knew she wouldn’t want us to grieve too long or to be sad for the rest of our lives. We knew we had to do something in her memory that would be lasting and be a continuous source of comfort to us and all who knew and loved Eve.
Eve loved children and had always been a champion for equality and justice, especially for underserved populations. The programs we have created in Eve’s memory reflect those values. Her spirit lives on in our hearts and in our work through our nonprofit organization—Eve’s Fund for Native American Health Initiatives. We know Eve would be proud of our efforts to make a positive difference in the lives of at-risk children and teens.

Thanks to the support of hundreds of friends and family members and the generosity of many people we’ve never even met, we have been successful in preserving Eve’s memory in countless ways over the years. Thanks to all who have believed in our vision for Eve’s Fund and for their support of the mission of the organization and its work.
Our work has been therapeutic and healing and has made a positive impact on the lives of nearly 60,000 Native American youth, primarily living on or near the Navajo Nation.
Like many who have loved deeply, we still have days that are dark when we miss Eve intensely. These will be brightened by a kind note from a stranger who happened upon our website, or thank you notes from our annual Eve’s Fund Scholarship recipients, or a Facebook fundraiser created by a young person who believes in our Eve’s Fund mission and wants to make a difference and spread the news among their own friends and loved ones.
One of the brighter days happened last summer when I had a chance to visit with the six-year old daughter of Eve’s best friend from college. Emma was so kind to honor Eve’s memory by naming her daughter after Eve. Charlotte Eve is a sweet, lovely girl with red hair almost the color of Eve’s. Upon seeing her for the first time in four years, she ran up to me, gave me a big, long hug and said: “We really miss Eve. We love her so much.” The empathy exhibited by this profound child reminded me that Eve’s spirit is still alive and always near. I will cherish those moments I had with Charlotte Eve for a long time. Thank you, dear Emma, for sharing Eve’s spirit with your first-born child.
