There is a lot of love in the air today! We wish all of you and your families and friends a Happy Valentine’s Day, with our loving thanks.
For us, this day is not just a time to celebrate all of the love in our lives, but another opportunity to be grateful to all of the people and organizations that have helped Eve’s Fund grow and flourish over the past nearly 18 years.
Thanks to our “Friends of Eve’s Fund,” 2022 was another successful year. Eve’s Fund is proud of our financial achievements and progress last year, which enabled us to continue to carry out our important work. We are grateful for the many new and sustaining individuals and organizations who supported us through their generous gifts and their Facebook fundraisers, for the new partnerships we established, and other recognition we received. Most importantly, we are proud that we were able to serve a large number of Native American youth through our injury prevention, literacy, scholarship programs and other community initiatives. With your continued support, we are committed to leaving the world a better place, in memory of our beloved daughter and sister, Eve Erin Crowell, in whose name Eve’s Fund was established in 2005.
Eve’s Fund Scholarship Programs
Over the past two years, we have significantly expanded our scholarship programs, thanks to your support. In addition to our ongoing annual support of the amazing high school students attending Navajo Preparatory School, we now provide scholarships to three outstanding seniors graduating from St. Michael Indian School on the Navajo Nation. Also, in partnership with Tribal Adaptive Organization, we now provide $3,000 in scholarships to recognize a male and female Native American student-athlete with a physical disability, on an annual basis. Hope you will check out these links provided, if you haven’t yet read about these initiatives.
Thanks to your support of our scholarship programs, these Navajo students, against great odds, will be able to continue their education and be empowered to pursue their goals and dreams in the future. In addition to the many donations to our scholarship programs from individuals and organizations, we are so fortunate in 2022 to have again received a very generous gift from the Andrew Delaney Foundation and, through their support and yours, we can confidently anticipate continuing our Eve’s Fund Scholarship programs for many years to come.
ThinkFirst Navajo Injury Prevention Programs
Here is a brief recap of our injury prevention programs in 2022:
– We partnered with NavajoYES again and distributed 100 kids’ bike safety helmets during National Brain Injury Awareness Month last March.
– Another 41 helmets were distributed to Kindergarten through Grade 6 students who participated in the Kayenta Bike Rodeo, which we co-sponsored for the second year in a row.
– Following a hiatus due to Covid, Eve’s Fund personnel were able to volunteer once again at the modified Shiprock (NM) Marathon last May to promote injury prevention. Hope to see some of you at this year’s marathon on May 6, 2023 in Shiprock.
Our Youth Literacy Program
Our big 2022 news was the relaunch of our Magic Tree House Teaching Bookshelf program, which improves literacy and inspires a lifelong love of reading in young Navajo students. Thanks to the gifts given on #GivingTuesday and through the end of the year, we have already distributed 1,200 books to seven elementary school across the Navajo Nation. The children love these books! A warm thank you to author Mary Pope Osborne for her passionate advocacy and support of children’s literacy and for her dedicated “Classroom Adventures Program.” As a result of her support, we are able to purchase the books at a deeply discounted rate, which make this program possible.
Community Initiatives
Eve’s Fund continually works to strengthen existing community collaborations and build new one with organizations with shared values and similar missions.
In 2022:
-We collaborated with our community partner once again, Native Pride, to sponsor their award-winning Native H.O.P.E. program to provide suicide prevention workshops to high school students in 2022, addressing a critical need in a high-risk group of Native American students. We will continue supporting this program in 2023.
-Through our new partnership with Carrie Tingley Hospital Foundation, we co-sponsored several of their “Camp Adventure” adaptive day camp sessions, serving children with permanent physical disabilities near the Navajo Nation in Gallup and Farmington, New Mexico.
