“Every child is capable of using imagination. Every child has a hunger to know things.
But not all children have access to the books that can stimulate their imagination
and satisfy their thirst for knowledge.”
— Mary Pope Osborne, award-winning children’s book author
This #GivingTuesday 2024, join Eve’s Fund in inspiring a love of reading and learning among Navajo children by helping us provide Magic Tree House book sets to Elementary school classrooms across the Navajo Nation.
Why This Matters:
Native American students often face significant challenges and inequities in education, including limited access to books, learning resources, and support systems. Eve’s Fund’s Magic Tree House Teaching Bookshelf Program—created in partnership with Mary Pope Osborne’s “Classroom Adventures” initiative—has been changing that since 2010.
Our powerful teaching bookshelves provide enough copies of titles, chosen by school leaders, for each child to have his/her own copy to read and enjoy in the classroom. These captivating books inspire imagination and build reading and learning skills on a variety of subjects. They open the students’ minds to a world beyond their communities and help them see a world of possibilities!
Our Goal:
With your help, and the continuing long-time support from the series author, Mary Pope Osborne, we aim to raise funds to place 4,000 Magic Tree House books in Title I classrooms on or near the Navajo Nation in Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah over the next year. These books will be distributed to classrooms where they can have the greatest impact, especially for children who are still recovering from the academic setbacks of the pandemic.
The Impact:
Proven Success and Addressing Challenges
Over the past three school semesters alone, we’ve distributed over 4,250 books to 17 elementary schools, averaging 250 books per school. Students who received these books have shown increased enthusiasm for reading, improved habits, and higher grades. Post-pandemic, many Navajo students—living in poverty and without reliable internet access—are still catching up academically. Books from the Magic Tree House series have proven especially effective in helping kids close learning gaps. Magic Tree House stories are more than just entertaining—they inspire dreams, ignite curiosity, and make learning about history, science, and culture fun. Most importantly, kids love these books!
