In 2010, we sponsored a Digital Storytelling Workshop at the Four Corners Regional Health Center in Red Mesa, Ariz. During the three-day workshop, Brenda K. Manuelito and Carmella Rodriguez of nDigiDreams guided 10 young Navajos through the creative process, helping them develop personal stories in their own voices.
The workshop began in a hogan, where each participant was encouraged to describe an important experience. Later in the computer lab, participants typed out rough drafts of their stories and added still photos and video clips to strengthen the narratives.
With coaching, the digital storytellers polished and whittled their creations down to about three minutes, the optimal time for an effective story. Finally, each participant screened their DVD story for everyone to see.
The entire digital storytelling process was very empowering for the young participants. For example, one young boy who would only mumble his idea in the hogan at the beginning of the workshop ended up standing tall, speaking clearly about his own personal story.
