Devyn Kazhe, Derek Parrish, and AJ Arthur Weatherwax sharing Native injury prevention stories through Eve’s Fund.
ThinkFirst injury prevention videos can help young people understand how one decision may change a life forever. Three new Voices for Injury Prevention (VIP) videos feature Devyn Kazhe, Derek Parrish, and AJ Arthur Weatherwax. They share the choices, injuries, and turning points that shaped their lives. As a result, their stories encourage young people to pause, think first, and make safer decisions.
Eve’s Fund produced the videos through its ThinkFirst Navajo initiative. A 2026 Quality-of-Life Grant from the New Mexico Governor’s Commission on Disability supported their production.
For more than 20 years, ThinkFirst Navajo has brought injury prevention education to Native youth and families. This award-winning program of Eve’s Fund was, until recently, the only ThinkFirst chapter dedicated to serving Native communities. We are now moving toward the broader name ThinkFirst while remaining proud of our roots in the Navajo Nation.
Enjoy these powerful videos from three very special people. You can watch through the links below.
Devyn Kazhe: Recovery Through Community and Sport
Devyn, a member of the Pueblo of Laguna from Paguate NM, sustained a spinal cord injury after driving under the influence in 2021. She awoke paralyzed from the chest down and faced the painful truth that the drunk driver who changed her life was herself. Spirituality, community, and adaptive sports helped her rebuild. Today, she competes in hand cycling, wheelchair basketball, mountain biking, and skiing—and shares her story so others will choose differently.
Derek Parrish: Learning to Pause Before Reacting
Derek who is Diné, grew up on the Navajo Nation in Sanostee, New Mexico, where violence, gangs, and drugs surrounded him. During an argument, another person intentionally struck Derek with a vehicle, causing a spinal cord injury. Wheelchair basketball became a turning point in his life. Now a college athlete and mentor, Derek urges young people to find the “pause button.” He encourages them to stop, reflect, and choose another path before reacting.
AJ Arthur Weatherwax: One Decision Changed Everything
AJ, an enrolled member of the Blackfeet Nation, in northwestern Montana, was 17 when he drove after drinking on Homecoming night. The crash left him with a traumatic brain injury and only a three percent chance of survival. After two months in a coma, he spent 17 months relearning everyday skills. Today, AJ shares his story in the hope that others will think before
