on Her 52nd Birthday
Eve Erin Crowell
November 4, 1974–February 24, 2005
The story behind Eve’s Fund for Native American Health Initiatives begins with Eve Erin Crowell, whose life continues to inspire the organization’s work more than 21 years after her death. On November 4, 2026, Eve would have celebrated her 52nd birthday. To mark the occasion, Eve’s Fund is sharing treasured memories, family photographs, and a personal interview that reveals the love, loss, and hope behind the foundation established in her name.
Eve remains an enduring presence in the lives of those who loved her. Through Eve’s Fund, her legacy continues to bring hope and opportunity to Native children and families.
Remembering Eve: The daughter behind Eve’s Fund
When Eve was five years old, she and her family moved from Massachusetts to Arizona, beginning a new chapter that would shape her lifelong affection for the Southwest and her appreciation for Native cultures.

During the family’s cross-country move, Eve was captivated by the Four Corners region from the moment they arrived. She was especially drawn to the jewelry made by Native Americans and wanted to buy it directly from the people who had created it. But she wasn’t shopping for herself. She wanted to choose a piece of jewelry for each friend she’d left behind and mail the gifts back to them.
This early gesture showed the curiosity, thoughtfulness, and generosity that would mark her life.
Eve grew into an accomplished young woman: a corporate attorney, a triathlete, an animal lover, and someone who cared deeply about children. She also believed strongly in helping others and made time for pro bono legal work alongside her professional responsibilities.
When Eve died in 2005, her parents, Dr. Robert M. Crowell and Barbara Crowell Roy, knew they wanted to honor her life in a way that reflected her values. Together, they established Eve’s Fund for Native American Health Initiatives in her memory, creating a lasting tribute to her compassion for others.
As Bob and Barbara deepened their understanding of the challenges facing young people on the Navajo Nation, Bob shared an observation Barbara has never forgotten:
“Hope is in short supply.”
Those four simple words helped shape Eve’s Fund’s commitment to expanding educational opportunities, promoting injury prevention and literacy, and supporting initiatives that help Native children and families build hopeful futures. Through partnerships with Native communities, that commitment has guided the organization’s work for more than two decades.
“Education is the ladder to success.
Go tell our people to climb it.”
– Chief Manuelito (Diné)
The story behind Eve’s Fund: a personal interview
In May 2025, as part of Eve’s Fund’s 20th-anniversary celebration, staff at Navajo Preparatory School in Farmington, New Mexico, recorded a special interview with co-founder and president Barbara Crowell Roy.
During the spontaneous and unscripted conversation, Barbara reflected on Eve’s life, the founding of Eve’s Fund, and the people and partnerships that have helped sustain its mission for more than two decades.
Although the interview runs nearly 30 minutes, it offers an unusually personal glimpse into the family history, experiences, and relationships behind Eve’s Fund. It also provides an opportunity to hear directly from one of the organization’s founders about the hopes that inspired its beginnings and continue to guide its work today.
Eve’s Fund extends its heartfelt thanks to the leadership and staff at Navajo Preparatory School for making this special interview possible, and for the school’s longstanding partnership in creating educational opportunities for Native students.
Keeping Eve’s memory alive
Near the end of the interview, Barbara shares a heartfelt message for other parents who have experienced the loss of a child.
Drawing on her own family’s experience, she reflects on the importance of remembering that every child’s life has meaning. Establishing a foundation is only one way of honoring that life. There are countless ways to preserve cherished memories and keep a child’s spirit present in the hearts of those who loved them.
For Eve’s family, Eve’s Fund has been a labor of love—a way to celebrate her life while helping create opportunities for future generations.

Rainbows always held a special place in Eve’s heart. Here, she shares a treasured moment with her mother, Barbara, beneath a rainbow by the sea.
